Should TikTok's Japanese account use a Japanese VPS server IP or a residential IP? Explanation of the differences.

Anyone who's tried and failed at operating a TikTok account in Japan knows a pattern: eight out of ten account issues are due to network conditions, and the most crucial element of those is the IP address. Simply put, operating a TikTok account in Japan requires a residential IP address; VPS (Virtual Private Server) IP addresses are practically unusable.

TikTok's Risk Control Logic—What Exactly Does It Check?

To understand why VPS IP addresses don't work, we need to understand how TikTok determines whether an account is "normal."

TikTok's content distribution mechanism is strongly regional. The platform determines which market an account "belongs" to based on your login IP address and then prioritizes pushing content to users in that region. In other words, if your IP address shows as being in Japan, the platform assumes you're a local Japanese user, and content will be pushed to Japanese users.

But this is only the first step. Besides location, TikTok also checks deeper information: the type of IP address (data center or home broadband), the ASN (Agent Number), whether the IP address has been used by other accounts before, and whether there are any violations.

If the IP address originates from a data center, has been shared by dozens of people, or has a history of violations, the platform's risk control system will label the account as "suspicious." The result is: lower account weight, video recommendations stuck at a few hundred, or even outright ban.

This is the fundamental reason why "data center IPs are unsuitable for TikTok"—it's not technically impossible, but the platform simply doesn't trust data center IPs.

What's the difference between Japanese VPS data center IPs and residential IPs?

Data Center IP (VPS/Data Center IP)

A data center IP is the outbound IP address of a server hosted in a data center. The ASN (Application Service Provider) of this type of IP points to a cloud service provider or hosting company, such as AWS, GCP, or various VPS vendors.

Advantages of Data Center IPs: Stable, high bandwidth, low latency, and inexpensive. Suitable for website hosting, API execution, and proxy relay.

Problems with Data Center IPs on TikTok: The platform can immediately identify a data center IP because the ASN directly exposes its origin. Once identified as a non-home network environment, the account will be marked as "not a real user," leading to traffic restrictions or account bans. Many people managing TikTok accounts in Japan have tried using Japanese VPS to build their own nodes, often resulting in the account being able to log in, but videos not being recommended, or frequent verification prompts.

  Residential IP (Native/Static Residential IP)

Residential IPs are IP addresses assigned to genuine home broadband connections by local Japanese telecom operators, such as NTT, KDDI, and SoftBank. TikTok considers these IPs to be "a genuine Japanese user."

Advantages of Residential IPs: High platform trust, extremely low risk control detection rate, high account survival rate.

Important considerations for Residential IPs: Significantly more expensive than data center IPs, and not all "residential IPs" are reliable. There are two further types:

Dynamic Residential IPs—The IP changes with each connection, unsuitable for long-term account maintenance, as the platform will perceive frequent changes in login location, triggering risk control measures.

Static Residential IPs (also called Static Residential ISPs)—The IP remains fixed; one account is bound to one IP for long-term use. This is the safest solution for operating TikTok in Japan.

The Difference Between Native IP and Broadcast IP

There's another easily overlooked concept: native IP and broadcast IP. A native IP refers to an IP whose registration location and actual usage location are consistent. For example, a Japanese native IP, when searched in various databases, will show a Japanese local operator as its location. TikTok will recognize this as a genuine Japanese user. Broadcast IPs, while also showing Japan in the search results, may have registration information in the US or other countries, "disguised" through broadcasting. They are easily exposed when the platform updates its database and performs in-depth checks.

  Selection Process – Four Steps

  Step 1: Understand Your Needs

Before selecting an IP, ask yourself a few questions:

Are you operating a single account or a matrix? If you're only operating one account, purchasing a dedicated Japanese static residential IP is sufficient. If you're managing five or ten accounts simultaneously, each account must have a separate IP—multiple accounts sharing the same IP is the fastest way to trigger batch risk control.

Which Japanese city is your content targeting? TikTok also has distribution preferences based on city. If your content is Tokyo-related, using a residential IP address located in Tokyo will be more advantageous than an IP address that is only specified to "Japan".

Step 2: Find the Right Service Provider, Don't Be Greedy for Cheapest Options

Many service providers claim to offer "Japanese residential IPs," but their quality varies greatly. When choosing a service provider, pay attention to the following:

Confirm that the IP type is a static residential ISP IP, not a dynamic proxy or data center IP. Many cheap service providers use data center IPs disguised as residential IPs; a simple ASN check will expose this.

Confirm that the IP is dedicated. Shared IPs mean they may have been used by other users, damaging their reputation. Dedicated IPs ensure purity.

Confirm that the IP location supports city-level targeting. IPs that are only specified to "Japan" offer limited help for localized recommendations on TikTok.

Does the service provider offer test IPs? Reliable service providers usually offer tests, allowing you to verify the IP quality yourself before deciding to purchase.

Step 3: Test IP Quality Before Buying

After obtaining an IP address, don't rush to configure it on your device. First, verify its quality. Use an online IP testing tool to check a few key fields:

IP Type – Is it labeled "Residential" or "ISP"? If it's "Hosting" or "Datacenter," exclude it immediately.

Carrier Information – Is it a Japanese broadband service provider (NTT, KDDI, SoftBank, etc.), and not a cloud computing company?

Geographic Location – Is it accurate to a specific city in Japan?

Risk Score – Is it marked as high-risk or blacklisted?

Step 4: Set Up the Operating Environment

After selecting the IP address, the configuration process is as follows:

First, ensure you have a basic overseas network environment. A static residential IP address itself cannot directly connect you to overseas networks; it further specifies the location of the IP address presented to the platform based on your existing ability to access overseas networks. The two are complementary, not replacements.

Configure a proxy to your operating device. Configure the static residential IP address on your mobile phone, emulator, or proxy software.

Fixed Device Environment. Set your device's language to Japanese and timezone to Tokyo time. Do not enable automatic location services. Device fingerprint consistency is also crucial; mismatches in system fingerprint, timezone, language, and IP address location will trigger risk control measures.

One Device, One IP, One Account. Each account should be assigned a dedicated IP address. Do not cross-use or frequently switch IPs.

Nurture the Account Before Posting. After configuring the environment for a new account, simulate normal user behavior for a few days before starting your normal posting schedule.

Are data center IPs completely useless?

Not entirely. Data center IPs are not entirely irrelevant to TikTok operations, but they cannot be used directly.

If you're just watching videos, researching content, or browsing the For You page to understand trends, a data center IP with a good connection (such as a SoftBank Japan connection or an IIJ connection) can be used. However, once you're involved in account registration, content posting, or live streaming—operations involving account identity—you must use a residential IP.

In addition, data center IPs are still useful for handling non-account-related business, such as cross-regional transmission of video footage, backup and storage of account data, and setting up internal management systems. The core principle is: account operations for the TikTok platform should use residential IPs, while backend technical operations should use data center IPs.

In short: for operating a TikTok account in Japan, using a static residential IP in Japan is the bare minimum; data center IPs simply cannot withstand the platform's risk control. Don't try to save money on IPs; there are too many lessons learned from a dirty IP ruining an account. It's better to spend time choosing a good service provider and testing IP quality beforehand than to regret it after your account is banned.
