What should I pay attention to when choosing an idle server?

  Hang-up servers have become a must-have tool for more and more programmers, script runners, and game studios. The so-called hang-up server refers to a remote server that can run 24/7, is continuously online, and processes tasks uninterruptedly. It is usually deployed in a data center and supports users to remotely control and run various applications. However, the purchase of hang-up servers is not as simple as ordinary cloud hosts. Its stability, network connectivity, resource configuration, system environment, etc. directly affect the execution effect of tasks.

  Before officially purchasing a hang-up server, you must first clarify your own hang-up target tasks. The server types corresponding to different tasks may be completely different. Different uses have different requirements for CPU frequency, memory capacity, network speed, and operating system compatibility. For example, script tasks have low memory requirements, but extremely high requirements for runtime stability; while crawlers are more sensitive to network speed and IP reputation.

  Choose an operating system: Windows or Linux? Windows system has good compatibility and a friendly graphical interface. It is suitable for running .exe and .bat tools, marketing software hang-ups, game simulator scripts, remote office, etc. Linux systems (such as Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS) are highly stable, low in resource usage, and support background operation and shell scripts. They are suitable for technical users such as developers, data analysts, crawlers, API interfaces, etc.

  Performance configuration selection needs to fit the task requirements. It is recommended that the CPU start with 2 cores, and 4 cores or more are recommended for game hang-up or multi-threaded scripts. Memory lightweight tasks can choose 1G~2G, and if it involves large-scale games and multi-threaded concurrent tasks, it should be configured with 4G or more. Hard disk SSD is recommended over mechanical hard disk, and disk speed directly affects task startup and log writing efficiency. If the bandwidth is only for internal processing, 1Mbps is enough; if remote desktop and public network access are required, it is recommended to start with 10Mbps. For long-running tasks, more attention should be paid to IO read and write capabilities and system response speed, rather than purely looking at CPU frequency or total memory value.

  Hang-up servers are essentially remote interactive devices, and network quality determines the smoothness of operation and the accuracy of script execution. When selecting an hang-up server, the network type recommended is BGP multi-line, CN2 GIA line or CMI optimized line. It is recommended to use test IP to evaluate line quality with network testing tools such as Ping, Traceroute, and MTR before purchasing. Severe packet loss will affect the script judgment logic and cause abnormal hang-up.

  Server stability and running time guarantee. The core demand of hang-up is 24-hour uninterrupted operation. Any system crash, downtime and restart will cause task interruption. The key to judging stability is the reliability of data center power supply (preferably Tier 3 or above), whether the host provider provides high-availability architecture support, whether the system supports "watchdog" or abnormal automatic recovery, and whether it supports snapshots or periodic backups. In addition, it is recommended to choose a host platform that supports remote restart, IP KVM, and console access, so as to remotely recover when the system is stuck.

  The use of hang-up servers depends on remote connection. It is recommended to give priority to servers that provide fixed IP + multi-protocol support + console access to meet multi-scenario login requirements. Common remote control protocols include: Windows RDP remote desktop protocol, which operates like a local computer and is suitable for visual operation; Linux SSH protocol, which operates through terminal remote commands and requires a certain command line foundation;

  During the hang-up process, a large number of IP accesses or abnormal traffic may cause the target site to be blocked, the server IP to be blocked or blacklisted. Therefore, static IP and low-pollution IP segments are preferred to avoid sharing IP to prevent the risk of "joint punishment". Pay attention to whether IPv6 support is provided. Some applications are particularly sensitive to IP reputation. It is recommended to purchase a host with an independent IPv4 address.

  Choosing the right hang-up server means getting twice the result with half the effort. The purchase of the hang-up server is not only related to the configuration level, but also to whether the task can run stably for a long time, process data uninterruptedly, and not affect the business. From system platform to network quality, from hardware configuration to service provider guarantee, each factor may determine the efficiency of the hang-up.
